plexconnect.org is a scam!! Do NOT pay for PlexConnect!! (it’s free…) plexconnect.org är en scam!! Betala INTE för PlexConnect!! (det är gratis…)

Today I bought an Apple TV 3, to be able to run PlexConnect. I have been using a Minix X5 before, which worked ok. But Netflix, vilket varit det huvudsakliga användningsområdet, har varit lite skakigt. Ibland funkar det kanon flera dagar i sträck, andra dagar kan jag få starta om flera gånger innan jag kan fortsätta titta på något.

Several friends of mine have been praising the Apple TV. However, I would also like to run e.g. rips from old VHS tapes (which I have been collecting for a long time). And, Apple’s support for different file formats isn’t exactly good… 🙂

Then I was told about Plex and PlexConnect. Plex is a server application which runs on a computer, where you can added directories with movies and music. Then you can access this media with clients on a huge number of devices, and the server makes sure that it can be played on any of those devices.

Apple TV doesn’t officially supports Plex, but there is a hack called PlexConnect which makes is possible. This is also 100% legal.

So, when I unboxed my Apple TV 3, I started to google for “PlexConnect”. And the first hit was a site called plexconnect.org. It looks pretty professional. I was kind of suprised that you had to buy the software for a couple of dollars, since none of my friends had mentioned this. But since it was about 8-9 US$ I didn’t thought much more about this.

BUT PLEASE READ THIS!! The software is FREE and available (with download instructions) here. The other site is a SCAM, only made to trick people to pay them money. Good idea, I can give them that, because I’m not sure if it’s illegal to sell open source software. Guess it depends on the license. But it’s not good manners, that’s for sure.

Thus, this post is only made with the hope that Google will rank it high enough so as many people as possible read this before paying money.

Netflix, which have been the main usage of this device, was kind of unstable. Sometimes it worked like a charm for several days. Sometime I needed to restart the device several times before I was able to keep on watching whatever I was watching.
