“Artis earnings from streaming services revealed” “Artis earnings from streaming services revealed”

Classic Rock writes today about how the money from streaming services are shared between artists, labels, publishers, composers and the streaming services. The numbers in the article is compared to a 9.99 euro/month subscription (common for e.g. Spotify) and looks like this:

Streaming services earnings

  • Labels: 4.56 euro
  • Digital platform holders: 2.08 euro
  • Publishers/composers: 1 euro
  • Artists: 0.68 euro
  • Taxes: 1.67 euro

There are already a lot of upset comments on this article, how unfair this is to the artists mostly, and several people states that they still buy CD/LP’s to support the artists.

So, I think the article should add some more info. But because it’s not, I will write the amount an artist get from CD sales. Or at least what I got when I was playing in VII Gates. We had two different record deals between 2003-2008. Both had the same royalty for the artist, 1 euro/CD. Since a new CD costs about 15 euro, you can probably do the math…

  • Artist share from CD sales: 1/15 = 6.7%
  • Artist share from streaming services: 0.68/9.99 = 6.8%

Thus. I am not saying that this is fair. But things are at least heading in a better direction for the artists 🙂
